There are some people in a family whose presence simply feels like home. For us, that person is our very own Lennie O'Dell “OD” Daniel.
Born in Northampton County, North Carolina, Grandma OD is the second oldest sister and fourth child born to Antoinette "Mama Baby Sis" Darden and William "Daddy Ballsy" Darden. She has lived a life rich with memories, lessons, laughter, and love. If you've ever had the pleasure of sitting with her for a while, you know you're likely to hear a story or two about growing up, raising a family, or the days when life looked a little different. Her stories are always juicy, entertaining and bound to make you laugh at some point. Grandma OD has liveeeeeeeed, okay!
To know Grandma OD is to know kindness.
Many who knew her mother, Antoinette, often say that Grandma OD inherited her gentle spirit, warm heart, and calm temperament. She has a way of making everyone feel comfortable, seen, and welcomed. Her door has never been closed to family, friends, or neighbors. If you came by, there was always a place for you to sit, something to eat, and conversation waiting. Her home has been a gathering place where people could find comfort, laughter, wisdom, and love.
That welcoming spirit reaches far beyond family. Throughout the neighborhood, countless people simply know her as "Grandma." Whether they are related by blood or not has never seemed to matter. Children and adults alike have been drawn to her warmth, her nurturing heart, and the genuine care she shows everyone she meets. She has spent a lifetime loving people, and they have loved her right back.
Grandma OD is the beloved widow of the late Sam “Coon” Daniel, Jr., whose memory continues to live on through the beautiful family they built together. She is the proud mother of Thomas "Garner" Daniel, the late, great, Alton "Bernard" Daniel, Connie, and Glenda, and she lovingly welcomed Sam as a bonus son. She is also blessed with her son-in-law, David.
Her greatest joy has always been her family. She is the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren: James "Leon", Linda, LaToya, Asia, Keisha, LaNika, DiMario, Sharena, Leonard "Mousey", and Aaron. She also lovingly embraces her grandson-in-law, Chance, along with three bonus grandchildren: Keiana, Kiya, and Kendall.
Today, her legacy continues through 14 great-grandchildren: Niari, Xavier "SoSo", Joshua, Shanice, Makhi, Royal, Mary Allen, Kendra, Jazmyn, Dante, Kamari, Mason, Indigo, Ivy, and two great-great grand children, Zen, and Ryu. Each one has had the privilege of knowing the love of a woman whose greatest gift has never been something she could buy, but the kindness she freely gives. Grandma OD is the grandma that sneaks in her purse to pull out a bill or two, fold it up in your hand and tell you not to tell a soul, just because. The grandma that bakes your favorite cake to add to the meal she’ll prepare when she knows you’re in town. She’s the grandma that will pray with you and for you without you even knowing — protecting your every step in life.
Grandma OD has taught us that family is built around the kitchen table, on front porches, during long conversations, shared meals, and open doors. She reminds us that sometimes the greatest legacy a person can leave isn't found in what they owned, but in how they made people feel.
How blessed are we that for so many of us, Grandma OD has made us feel loved, welcomed, and at home. That is a legacy worth celebrating. We love you, Grandma OD. Thank you for being exactly who you are.
